It is far too common to find yourself burned out when starting and running your business. Grinding in your business, overworking, not getting enough rest, and not having fun, is glorified. It is generally thought that fun and relaxation come after you have “made it”. However, grinding is not sustainable. So, this is how I manage my energy levels in my business.
I have three priorities.
My mental and physical health are number one.
When my mental and physical health are not right, nothing is going to get done. Nothing in my business, nothing at home… nothing is going to get done. So, I make sure that I institute balance in my life as much as possible. My work hours are Monday through Thursday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. If it is not a revenue-generating activity, the activity is held until the following day. I manage my time very well when I am working in those hours. I make sure I take a vacation and have fun. That is the first thing I do.
If I have a good relationship with my kids and my husband, I cannot focus on my clients.
However, when I was part of the grind and die group, I did not talk to my husband or my kids much. I was working all the time. My husband, kids, and I were not really talking. There was some tension because I was always doing something else. In addition, I found it hard to focus on my clients when my family dynamic was off. So, I make sure that I make time for them in some way, shape, or form. It helps to have a good relationship. Having a strong relationship with my family means I serve my clients better and make more money.
If it is not on my calendar, it does not exist.
My calendar is color-coded, so it makes it easy for me to keep events organized. This brings me to this. I only create 1 to 3 goals per day. All the tasks needed to complete my daily goals are plenty of work for the day and need focus to complete properly. Instead of burning out trying to accomplish my whole task list in one day, I keep my goals and my calendar simple. My calendar keeps me on track with where I need to be, what I need to do, and when it needs to be done.
Developing a business does not mean you need to burn the midnight oil every night. It does not mean you need to be chronically sleep-deprived or live a life without fun. What it does mean is that you need to manage your energy levels, so you can serve your clients at a high level and live your best life while you are alive to enjoy it.
